creative writing class stuff-may have been posted before. ( Writing writing, before the clonopin kicks in )And this is my final short story that I wrote for my creative writing class, all filled with lovely subtext (hopefully). And one more piece I wrote for creative writing. The assignment was to write a love scene. This is all really for myself, and no one has to read/comment on it, btw. Last one, I swear. Something that actually happened. The assignment was to write a scene mostly using dialogue. Current Mood: discontentCurrent Music: None |

All the news that's fit to print Basic AccountsAs we noted in our last News post, as of today users will be able to downgrade their account to Basic through the Manage Account page. In addition, visitors who are not logged in to LiveJournal will now be seeing ads on Basic accounts and communities; the experience of logged-in users will not change. Paid Account SaleWe are having a paid account sale starting today through September 30, 2008. During that period, you can purchase a 12 month block of paid time and receive a 20% discount – this paid time can be added to any account, or purchased as a gift for your favorite LJ-friend. For full details, see our Paid Account Sale page. Announcing lj_advisoryWe are pleased to announce the creation of the lj_advisory community, set up so you can find news and information related to the activities of the Advisory Board. We recognize that it has taken us a while to get this community up and running, and that has caused some frustration. From now on, we will post topics which will be discussed by the Advisory Board prior to the date of the meeting and summaries of meetings after they occur. Throughout the year, the Advisory Board may also post requests for opinions on topics which may be discussed at future meetings. This is the official community for communication with the Advisory Board – comments will be read by Advisory Board members who will respond as they feel appropriate. RTE + Opera and Safari = <3RTE stands for Rich Text Editor, which is the default method of posting entries from the Post an Entry page. Our Rich Text Editor is based on the open-source FCKeditor code. It allows you to make links or LiveJournal user tags, insert photos or videos, and format your entries without needing to know HTML. That is, unless you use Opera or Safari as a browser, in which case you couldn't use the RTE. That will be changing today. We are pleased to announce that the RTE has been upgraded to the latest version of the FCK code, which includes support for Opera and Safari! In addition, many of the bugs in the old version have been fixed. If you've been using RTE, you will most likely need to clear your browser's cache in order to use the new version. <strike> vs. <b>Last year we changed the visual display of deleted and suspended usernames from a line through the username to a bold font. This had the effect of making the name unclickable - which meant that no one could easily determine whether the username had been deleted or suspended. We've reversed this display, returning deleted and suspended usernames to a struck-through and clickable state. Flash Fiction Contest UpdateThe deadline to submit your flash fiction entry to "Quick Tales," LiveJournal's partnership with Caferati in India is fast approaching. Users who wish to find out more about this exciting contest should take a look at our india_writing community. Be quick! Entries must be received by midnight, September 7th, 2008 and the contest is open to all who have a mailing address in India, regardless of where they currently reside or citizenship. are you kidding me, I look like a robocop This morning I was lazing about in bed half listening to the morning news in the background, trying to wake up, when I apparently fell back to sleep and had a dream that Will Smith had...?!...died last night? And all the local news could talk about was the Obama Show happening tonight, and how the Secret Service is closing the interstate near the stadium for FOUR OR FIVE HOURS (I have never been more glad that I don't actually live in Denver) etc., and all I could think was COULD SOMEBODY PLEASE TELL ME WHAT HAPPENED TO WILL SMITH?? Apparently my subconscious is very concerned. Will Smith, I hope you are still alive, man. I don't even know. Anyway. I am glad I don't live there, but it has been cool to see Denver so front and center all week. I mean, The Daily Show LIVE FROM DENVER! is pretty much the best thing I have ever seen. It's true, this entire state sometimes is a beer commercial. (Arghh, I can't seem to get TDS website's clips to play on this computer, but pretend I am linking that segment here. [ Here's part of it?]) In other news, New Shows I Have Watched Recently And Can Now Discuss, aka, Let's Talk About My New Favorite TV Characters, Both Whom (? Augh, grammar is HARD) Conveniently Have The Last Name of "Reese": 1) Life, aka I love Dani Reese! A lot. And Sarah Shahi. And Damian Lewis. And the show itself is pretty good I guess! 2) T:SCC, aka, HOLY BRIAN AUSTIN GREEN (now those are words I never expected to type), aka MORE DEREK REESE, PLEASE, SHOW. Anyway, I should have started watching this show last spring like everyone else, because it is pretty awesome. I am in. Also, will Summer Glau ever get to play a Normal Girl, Y/N? The other day daynr and I were talking about the incredible transition of Brian Austin Green: From David Silver to Derek Reese and how pretty much IT IS AMAZING, OKAY. And so I bring you a little mini-spam: ( The Evolution of David Silver )ETA: Ha ha HAHAHAAHA OH MY GOD.ANYWAY, TO SUM UP: Thank God tv is almost back, although I have way too many shows to watch this fall (Gossip Girl, OTH, Life, T:SCC, HIMYM, Fringe, possibly the new 90210 (I was raised on 90210! I sort of feel obligated!), Pushing Daisies, Bones, The Office, 30 Rock, Entourage, AND OF COURSE WINCHESTER PIE. Um. Ridiculous. This is too much television.), including the return of fandom's favorite abusive boyfriend, PRISON BREAK! That show that everyone gave up last year, but will now go crawling back to because HE'S SORRY, BABY. HE DIDN'T MEAN TO KILL DR. SARA! HE'LL NEVER DO IT AGAIN! LET HIM MAKE IT UP TO YOU, FANDOM! COME BACK! Oh well, okay, this is an awful metaphor, but OKAY. If you PROMISE, Prison Break. Don't let it happen again, Prison Break. Current Mood: rejuvenated |

Hatchling I am going to destroy the GREs. My paper is going to be published in a peer-reviewed journal, and I am actually loving the research, coding and writing of this paper. I'm not in school, but I am doing this work because I am interested in the results. As for the Psych subject GRE test, I have heard it is impossible. That doesn't matter, because I am going to blow it away. And I'm going to do this because I fucking love psychology, and to study then blast through a test on the subject will give me infinite joy.
I am applying to some of the top developmental psychology programs in the country. I am doing this and I am going to get into at least a few of them. I am also applying to the medium level programs, and I will get into ALL of them AND get tons of money to do so. They will actively pursue me because of my record of research and my real-life experience.
Speaking of that real-life experience, I am the best fucking TSS at PA Mentor. Well, maybe not, but I am pretty damn close. I barely need a BSC, but when I have one I work with them and allow their suggestions to guide me. I make a difference in the lives of kids and their families, as well as in classrooms. Immediately after I graduated with latin honors from college, I got a job in my major and am excelling at it.
Even if I do live with my parents.
I read the New Yorker, and I get the cartoons and covers.
I am working harder at getting into shape than I ever have since field hockey or lacrosse. I am taking all my desires to punish myself and my body and funnelling them into making myself stronger.
Most importantly, I discovered this week that I have people who care about me. I have people who care about me so much they are willing to beat my ass when it is needed, and to cuddle me when that is needed too. I thought that no one in my family cared, but my brother does. Someone I overlooked my whole life turned out to be the one who was there when I needed him most. People who I let slip by all summer came for me anyways, even though I had withdrawn from them. They came and got me and picked me up and smacked sense into me.
I no longer do any of the above things because I am striving to be the girl my mother wants me to be, but because they will turn me into the girl I personally want to be.
I'm not that girl anymore. I'm not the girl who needs the boy to tell her that she is worthy. I don't need to find my worth through mindless meaningless sex with whomever I can get to take me home. I'm not the slut anymore, and I won't ever let anyone treat me like it again.
I don't have to accept anything other than the worship and partnership that I deserve from a guy. I will find the person who will help me with my goals and see me for who I am, not the person I used to be. I will no longer settle for anything less than I deserve, because I am amazing.
I made a mistake and I hit the bottom, and people helped drag me up and now I will never let myself fall there again.
Also, I got a super sweet new phone and the best dog in the world, and a new puppy coming soon. I grow orchids and violets and they don't die. I have the most comfortable bed in the world (or will, once I get the new mattress that I deserve).
These are my accomplishments and my goals and the things that make me who I am. These are the things that make me happy and what I need to remember whenever I feel like no one cares. I'm sorry you all had to read them, but I needed to put them out there.

Haven't posted in a while. Again. Some more. Someone slashed one of my tires on Sunday. And clearly I have not faced enough adversity, because I cannot brush it off with a quip about my lack of cleavage.
I didn't realize it was slashed at first. I just thought it was a random flat - I'd caught a nail or something just before I got to work and hadn't noticed it. I changed it (all by myself) and was very proud of the fact that I'd changed it (all by myself).
And then the tire people told me it was slashed.
Guys this happened at work. Between 3 and 5 pm on a Sunday afternoon, out in front of my store. And I can't think of a single incident from Sunday that it might have been related to. Someone thought it would be funny? Has a grudge against me? A grudge against my store? A grudge against Honda civics? Some brat was bored and destructive? I DON'T know. And I'm there really late A LOT of the time. I mean, we close at midnight. I don't usually get out till close to one. And I've always been careful, but I've never been worried. I'm worried now. And I don't know which would be worse - a random attack or something deliberately aimed at me. |

messy, messy I am back at Klutz for a short while, and am helping with some craft projects. Apparently at some point in my adult life I have become the person who uses too much glue. Remember that kid in first grade? Always sticky, and things tended to fall off the collages because the glue would be so thick it never dried. My fingers are all glue-y, as is a section of the reception desk, and I just stuck to a pen I had picked up and was trying to put back down. On the one hand, I am a little dismayed to find out I've become a too-much-glue person (as a child I was way too anal for that). But on the other hand, playing with glue! Current Mood: creative |

But for the grace of Whitney But for the grace of Whitney Port, I would not be watching The Hills anymore. I can't believe I managed to get myself snared into this scripted reality show, but 2 years ago, I was bored on a Sunday afternoon and MTV was running an all-day marathon and I got hooked. Mind you, I got hooked on the Lauren/Jason fiasco and what I thought was a wonderfully close bond of friendship between Lauren and Heidi. Yeah, how things have changed. With each passing episode, every gossip magazine article and article of over-priced LC designs my hatred for Lauren Conrad grows. I'm not saying she's a bad person but she's incredibly self-involved, so much so that she can't see how hypocritical, judgmental and bitchy she's become. Lo is basically Lauren without the nicey-nice filter. As for Audrina, she should be on her own show called "The Hills Have Dead Eyes". She's a lovely, lobotomized, sweet girl. |

Space 2063 I now have more reasons to hate the Fox network. I can now retroactively hate Fox for canceling Space: Above and Beyond after only 1 season in 1996. Yes, I know it was 12 years ago and I didn't watch a single episode when it aired, but I feel I have the right to be pissed. I should be grateful that it got more episodes than Firefly but sorry, Fox. You still suck big donkey balls. This weekend, my boyfriend picked up a bare-bones copy of the series from Futureshop for $20. We watched about 7 episodes and with each the show just got better and better. That's when I asked him what network it aired on. He wasn't sure. He just remembers it airing at the odd time of Sundays at 7pm. Then I read the back of the DVD box and read that this show was from the producers of The X Files. That's when I knew. That's when I had the flashbacks to TV ads for the show and remembering that I wanted to watch but could never catch a single episode because it aired on some random night before 8pm. I should have known. The show had such great potential. Yes, there are similarities to Starship Troopers, but the cast is talented and there's no Denise Richards. The show is more about the human response to war and the camaraderie between soldiers in a unit than the evil unknown enemy. It was like Tour of Duty in space. Great, now I've got Paint It Black stuck in my head. |

Yay! Leaving early!! yay! My boss said we can leave early today!! Assuming I actually do get to leave at 2 (realistically it will be 2:30), I am going to use this time to buy a new pair of jeans that fit me properly and don't make me look like a fat cow. Hopefully.
Oh jeezy creezy. I will never leave here. I have to make a stupid phone call that's going to take all f-ing day. I HATE calling Government Agencies. Ok, maybe it won't be so bad. You know, sometimes it's more stressful to plan to leave early than to just work until the end of the day. |

There are no world records, only Michael Phelps’s last time. Posts I Have Started and Never Finished In the Last Two Weeks, So That Now They Are Old News and I Am Over It, A List. That I will now post because I guess I should prove that I am still alive! HELLO, LJ. I GOT LOST IN THE OLYMPIC SWIMFEST LAST WEEK. I'm back now. - Who would like to talk to me about Ian O'Shea? If you know who Ian O'Shea is, TALK TO ME ABOUT IAN O'SHEA YOU GUYS (or the book itself, I guess?), BECAUSE. UM. IAN O'SHEA. Ian O'Shea! I keep thinking that if I keep retyping the letters I-A-N- -O-'-S-H-E-A, those words will eventually lose all meaning. NOT SO FAR. Anyway, the book itself was, whatever, it was fine, I don't know, but...IAN O'SHEA! I am totally in to that dude.
- You know, the more people hate on Michael Phelps, the more I LOVE HIM. He probably is a huge douche, but he is also a gigantic awkward dork, and that is endearing to me. Is that the opposite of fandom backlash? (I don't know which, Swim Fandom? Olympic Fandom?) Fandom backlash backlash? Backlash squared, FRONTlash? I don't care, but I am sad that the PHELPS FAMILY OLYMPIC PROJECT has come to a close. Who will NBC drool over now? And his sisters! I will miss seeing his sisters lose their collective shit in the stands every night.
( ALSO ) I believe that's what I call: A-MAZING.
- The other day I saw that Rob Estes is going to be on the new 90210, and that knowledge caused a horrifying chain reaction of embarrassing events, beginning with hours of youtubing and leading up to downloading multiple episodes of--AHAHAH PERHAPS I AM SHOWING MY AGE HERE, BUT--Silk Stalkings! You guys! Who here watched that show, tell me! Rita & Chris! Remember how they called each other "Sam" all the time? ( Okay, I am editing this video in, IT IS AMAZING )
Rita and Chris are a perfect example of what happens to your cop-partners-in-love/TV Show OTP when they actually finally get together, fall in loooove, and get married: (uhh, SPOILER ALERT from 1995) SOMEBODY GETS SHOT AND DIES IN THE VERY NEXT EPISODE. (Let this be a lesson to you, Booth and Bones.) It was so awesome/terrible, and that guy used to wear turquoise pants and purple sports jackets and had amazing 90s hair, their police station was built out of neon lights and miniskirts, it was a completely inappropriate show that I used to watch as a teenager WITH MY GRANDMOTHER, and I loved it so, so much. Anyway, I need to netflix those dvds. And Rob Estes, the new 90210? Really? Actually, yeah, I can see that. That makes perfect sense.
- I can't believe I didn't know that IceTwin/TROY (!!!) is in Jared's Hilarious Movie! Troyyyyy! ILU, TROY. (I am not too proud to self-link, world, sorry, TROY!SPAM WAS AWESOME.)
- MOST IMPORTANTLY: My sister is due to have her baby ANY DAY, and they're probably just going to go ahead and induce labor later this week, so when I disappear again, that's why! This makes me an aunt to the fourth power. Or perhaps 4XAunt. Aunt E x 4! Something.
- And finally, GIP, because there is still nothing funnier than Growing Up Cullen, so, ICON.

I be parched! That was the one ye ol' English phrase I remember from ye ol' Bristol Renaissance Faire that I went to on Sunday. I'd never been to a Renaissance Faire before, (and had no desire to do so either), but my pal gave me a free ticket and if there'll be giant bbq'd Turkey legs to be eating and ale to be drinking, I'm there. But turns out, the thing was far more fun then I ever expected. Why? ( I rode an elephant! )How are you? |

Olympics tonight Tonight is Olympic event I’m most excited about, the women’s 10 km open water swim. It’s going to be held in the rowing venue, which might also be where the triathletes swam? It’s the first time this event has been held at the Olympics although it has been held in both the commonwealth games and I think as part of the FINA world competition. Traditionally there has only been pool swimming and there the longest women’s swim is 800m, which is still the case. The men have the 1500m event, but the women’s distance ends at 800m.
Swimming in open water also just feels different, it’s choppy, there are no walls to push off, and the swimmers will fight for position around the turns. Like cycling, drafting behind your competitors comes into play, as does sprinting at the end. The most amazing thing to me, is that they are going to swim 10 km in around 2 hours. Maybe under that time. That is fast. I know I’m not a fast swimmer, and in a pool, I can do about 3 km an hour. Across the Northumberland strait, it took me 5 hours and 15 minutes to complete 13 km. I suspect that there will be no currents in the race tonight , so that will make the race faster. Still, the open water swim at Kerney lake had no currents, and there it took me an hour and a half to swim 5 Km. So to play with the top open water swimmers I would have to double my speed (no Olympic dreams for me).
I don't know if NBC will be showing a live feed of the event. CBC has a dedicated feed at 9 pm Eastern. It should be a fun race to watch. |

Dr. Who So I've never seen this show before, but everyone else seems to watch so I finally got around to it. The new series anyway - there's no way I'm slogging through all thirty years of it. So far I've seen Season 1. I like it quite a lot, though it does have some rather glaring flaws to get past. The primary one is the utter ugliness of its look. The show began in the 60's and still looks as if it were filmed in the 60's. The special effects are AWFUL. The villains generally look dumb, with especial mention for THE villain - the Daleks. Flying trashcans with evil plungers are ... stupid. Almost everything is filmed on set, and it looks it. It's just not an attractively filmed show. What generally rescues the show is the acting by the leads and the fact that the show likes to have fun - it doesn't take itself seriously. Rose is adorable and I love Eccleston as the Doctor - I'm really going to miss him. The show does a good job with continuity - which is no joke when time travel is involved. The emotional journeys add a needed weight to a show which is otherwise rather silly. ( Episode reactions )I have not seen anything past Season 1 (except for "The Girl in the Fireplace" and "Blink") - so no spoiling me. |

pics of my "babies"! :) Buster sitting in Bandit's spot on the couch :) Bandit at work with me Bandit happy in the snow Bandit sad with his hurt paw Buster's belly Buster's face! You can kind of see his "bad" ear So those are my babies. I'm at my parents' house now, and my 15 year old cat who still lives with them just chased a big German Shepard out of the yard! It was super funny. Bandit was not so inclined to chase the big dog away. He tried, but he lost. Oh, and one should never poke Buster in the belly while saying "belly belly belly!!" He will attack you. And possibly the person sitting next to you. |

How can August be half over already? WHEW!! Real life = ... I cannot find a single word or phrase to adequately capture what this past few weeks/months has been like. Think of those >>>>>WHOOOOOOSH! blurs that the Road Runner used to make on the old cartoons. No time to identify what you were hearing or seeing just Doppler Effect speed noises and a facefull of wind left in his wake. THAT's kinda what my Real Life has been like. But in a good way. Mostly. * * * * One silver lining on that "mostly" - realized recently that my depression downward spirals (which, though more and more infrequent, still exist) are apparently far more linked to hormones than I originally thought. Going to start tracking them related to TOM and see. * * * * The AC guys started work yesterday! They should be entirely done by middle of next week meaning MY FAMILY CAN ALL COME HOME FINALLY!!!!!! (It is more than TWO MONTHS today. Enough is enough.) * * * * Momma is still feeling great. Not only are all the problems and chronic fatigue gone, but she says in some ways she feels even better than she has for a number of years. (Certain minor allergic reactions/coughing/sleep issues seem to have cleared up too.) * * * * Our non-profit's second annual women's retreat begins four weeks from today - and we already have 35 people registered! That may not seem like much, but realize that last year we only had about 45 total and the majority of those registered in the last week or two. * * * * Also, two of my long-long-LONG-term friends who live out-of-state/out-of-town and we only get to see about once a year will be coming! And maybe the third sister too! I'm so excited! We haven't all been roomies together since ... gosh. 1996? And that was actually only the older two sisters and me. For all four of us at once ... Wow. I don't even know. * * * * Somewhat tarnished lining: After three solid weeks of exercising 45+ minutes daily last month, I am now on a similar streak of NOT exercising at all. Granted I've been incredibly busy, and very active with cleaning/packing and moving boxes/furniture/etc, but still. One of you give me a friendly shove towards the treadmill, okay? * * * * What I Learned Today: (It was actually last night, but whatever) You know the little plastic "arm" inside your toilet tank that lifts up when you push down the handle and causes the flush? That is called the "flapper". * * * * Watermelon is finally in season, for which let us all give thanks. It took forever this year for our local grocery stores to get large, tasty, ripe juicy watermelons. * * * * I currently have two in the fridges. * * * * Well, one and a half. * * * * In fact, I think I hear it calling my name right now. Time for a afternoon snack! |
